Join a knowledgeable guide and explore the surroundings of Sabalo Lodge as you search together for mysterious nocturnal creatures. What nature chooses to reveal is always up to her — you may encounter various frogs, crabs, snakes, spiders, and other fascinating insects. The silence of the night is often broken by different mammals, which are more often heard than seen. Please move quietly and respectfully at all times. Follow your guide’s instructions carefully and avoid grabbing branches or tree trunks — you never know what might be resting on the other side or whether it may have thorns. This night walk will help you better understand and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding rainforest.

Night jungle excursion beyond the Sabalo Lodge property, within walking distance.

The rainforest comes alive after dark. This guided walk follows flat coastal jungle terrain similar to the trails around Sabalo Lodge, but in a wilder setting beyond our property. What you see is always up to nature — frogs, insects, spiders, snakes, or perhaps mammals moving silently through the trees. The ground may be damp or muddy, and the air filled with jungle sounds. This excursion is for confident, physically fit guests. Groups are small (2–5 people), and the guide may shorten the route if needed. Please move quietly and respectfully. Wear sturdy shoes, long sleeves and trousers, and bring a reliable flashlight (not a mobile phone). This is real jungle — authentic, unpredictable, unforgettable.

BOOKING The day before is usually OK. Suitable only for guests in good physical and mental health.

Mountain night jungle excursion, transport by car.

After sunset we depart from Sabalo Lodge for an approximately 30-minute drive into the mountains to Finca Encanta, where the rainforest reveals a very different atmosphere than in the lowlands and where biodiversity is even richer. This advanced night excursion is designed for confident and physically fit guests. Trails can be humid and occasionally muddy, and conditions are natural and unpredictable. What you encounter is never guaranteed — frogs, insects, reptiles, or nocturnal mammals — nature decides what she reveals. Groups are usually small (2–5 people) to maintain a quiet and respectful experience, and the guide reserves the right to shorten the route if any participant experiences difficulty. Please be ready at reception after dark, wear sturdy shoes, long trousers and long sleeves, and bring a reliable headlamp or flashlight (mobile phones are not sufficient). Move quietly at all times and avoid touching tree trunks or branches, as you never know what may be resting on the other side; watch for thorns and snakes.

Jungle during the day - from beginners to advanced

Jungle during the day - from beginners to advanced

During the day, the rainforest feels very different from at night. You can admire the endless network of trees and plants, and depending on the season, the colors and flowering change throughout the year. Spotting wildlife requires patience and attention. Small mammals often move quickly through the branches, leaving only subtle signs behind. The quieter you walk and the more focused you are, the more you will discover. Seeing larger mammals (except monkeys) is a rare bonus, but sometimes we are lucky and encounter coatis, anteaters, or even tapirs. There is no need to worry about large predators. However, you are very likely to observe macaws and toucans in the treetops and have a good chance of spotting iguanas or other tree-dwelling lizards.

Horse riding – basic and advanced

Horse riding – basic and advanced

It is time to discover Costa Rica from the back of a horse. For beginners, this can be a surprisingly wonderful experience. First, you might surprise yourself just by getting into the saddle. Then the others start moving and you stay still — because your horse has decided not to move yet. A classic situation. After a few gentle taps, your horse finally understands and suddenly you are moving too — sometimes even a little faster than expected. Beautiful, exciting, and just a little bit humbling. Don’t worry, our experienced local guide is with you the entire time and will help you feel safe and confident. The ride leads through fields, rural paths, and across a shallow river. Please wear proper clothing and always follow the guide’s instructions. Covered ankles and calves are required. Flip-flops are definitely not recommended.

Ride along country paths and across a river. A true mountain experience for those who want more than a basic ride. No need to be an expert rider — but you should be ready for adventure.

Set off on an unforgettable horseback adventure into the surrounding countryside and mountains. Friendly and well-trained horses will carry you from the entrance of Sabalo Lodge into a landscape full of open fields, river crossings, and forest trails. You will ride through rivers, climb steeper hills that the experienced horses descend with remarkable confidence, and enjoy breathtaking views along the way. Swimming in the river is possible depending on weather and group preference — you don’t have to enter the water, but you can if you wish. Along the route you may see various bird species, including beautiful macaws and toucans, and with some luck even monkeys in the hills. Whether you are an experienced rider or a courageous beginner ready to challenge yourself, this tour offers an exciting and rewarding experience. And my personal impression? I was nervous before my first mountain ride. If someone had told me earlier that I would do this, I might not have believed it. Yet now I am happy I did. The river crossings are surprisingly fun, and even descending a forest slope becomes a moment you will never forget. Just remember to duck under low branches! Don’t wait — reserve your place for this unique horseback journey today.

Looking for a peaceful beach at the edge of the world, where you might not meet another soul?

Travel by boat along the river all the way to where it meets the ocean. Here you will find a small natural paradise — a garden with seating, a sandy beach, toilets, and showers. You can relax, take photos (especially if you bring a tripod), or simply enjoy the silence. After a short walk along the coastline, you will reach a remote beach with no land access from inland. The beach is about 200 meters long and often feels completely deserted. The ocean is wild and powerful, sometimes showing its strength. Swimming is possible, but only under the guide’s instructions and typically in the safer back section of the beach. Ocean currents tend to move toward the rocky front part of the shore, where reefs begin. You will also find shaded areas near the edge of the forest and a small freshwater stream flowing into the ocean, perfect for rinsing off the salt water. After your swim, return to the garden area for lunch and enjoy the atmosphere before heading back by boat.

Corcovado National Park

Corcovado National Park

Would you like to experience untouched wilderness up close? Corcovado National Park is unique for its size and the incredible diversity of wildlife and plant species found here. The forest is truly full of life. It would be a great pity not to see at least some of the well-known local species—sloths, anteaters, tapirs, harpy eagles, and several species of monkeys (not only howler monkeys). This part of the park is slightly less visited than Sirena. As a reward for more challenging terrain, you will enjoy greater tranquility and fewer visitors. The daily number of people allowed to enter Corcovado is limited, so early reservation—especially during the high season—is necessary. A copy of your passport is required for the booking. Bring comfortable sportswear (ideally not only for one use). You can keep your phone with you for photos. Please remember that disembarkation from the boat is directly onto the beach—expect to get wet. In San Pedrillo you will find toilets, showers, and a resting area. Divers may encounter sea turtles, reef sharks, rays, and many other marine creatures. The journey begins with a boat transfer from Sabalo Lodge, passing along the Sierpe River and then across the open Pacific Ocean. After approximately one hour, you will reach the island and begin your diving experience. During whale season, humpback whales may be spotted along the way. After your dives, you can relax on the island’s beach, where basic facilities such as restrooms and freshwater showers are available. Transport to the departure dock Pylon is not included — see transport section.

BOOKING Booking at least two days in advance is usually sufficient. In peak season, it is better to reserve at least one week ahead.

It is not unusual to encounter dozens of dolphins swimming alongside the boat. Whale sightings are also frequent.

Are you hoping to see whales? Here you have a very high chance. The waters around Isla del Caño provide ideal conditions for breeding and raising young, which is why humpback whales visit the area twice a year. Do not expect only whales — you may also encounter pods of dolphins that often swim and play around the boat. Our experienced guides know where to look and how to approach wildlife respectfully. Throughout the tour, we follow strict environmental guidelines to ensure maximum protection of nature. The boat usually anchors in open waters near the island. As you scan the horizon, dolphins may suddenly appear, swimming close to the vessel. It is a unique experience to observe these intelligent animals in their natural habitat. During the season, you may also witness whales surfacing, raising their fins, or even breaching. If conditions are suitable, we may briefly stop for swimming. Feel free to ask any questions during the tour. Transport to the departure dock Pylon is not included — see transport section.
